Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
(SURE '08)
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is pleased to announce its Summer Undergraduate Research Experience for Summer 2008 (SURE’08). This 10-week program is designed with our educating the professional scientist philosophy in mind, and offers a unique and rewarding summer experience. Highlights of this program include the opportunity to perform multi-disciplinary, cutting-edge research in dynamic highly collaborative research groups, while simultaneously participating in professional development activities and workshops. We offer competitive summer stipends and provide university housing.
Applications are due March 15, 2008
The notification of students selected for the program will begin in late March/early April
For additional information and instructions on the application process, see the comprehensive information brochure or contact the SURE’08 program coordinator. The information brochure, application form, and faculty reference form appear as links to this site, along with supplemental information regarding participating faculty and faculty research interests. The preferred summer student candidate will have completed 2nd-semester organic chemistry by the start of the SURE’08 program (a rising junior or senior), but all serious undergraduate students desiring summer research opportunities are encouraged to apply. The SURE’08 program is custom designed to best introduce students from other universities to our department faculty, college resources, and university culture. Current USM students interested in undergraduate research should follow the guidelines outlined on our department undergraduate research page. The recruiting coordinators, departmental faculty, and staff are eager to answer questions and steer students interested in research toward current and future opportunities.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Southern Mississippi has for many years brought in undergraduate students from other universities to participate in ongoing research during the summer. Summer 2008 is expected to continue this effort through our SURE’08 program. The department faculty are dedicated to the philosophy of educating the professional scientist and demonstrate this continuously with their willingness to plan, participate in and fund unique educational and professional development experiences for undergraduates. In addition to the SURE’08 program, a strong core undergraduate research program exists, which includes USM undergraduates, students of neighboring universities, local community colleges, and high schools. Additional student support is provided by the multi-departmental MRSEC, MFGN and AGEM programs.
