Outreach, Research and Sponsored Programs

Government documents such as the Glenn Report predict a shortage of scientists and engineers that is arising in large part from lack of adequate preparation in mathematics and science at the fifth through 12th-grade levels. In response to this need, we have initiated a strong educational thrust directed at K-12. We are initiating educational outreach thrusts to seek federal funding to underpin Mississippi's K-12 math and science infrastructure. We are recognized and funded by the National Science Foundation for our Polymer Learning Center, our recently funded Materials Research Science and Engineering Center and Industry/University Cooperative Research Center, and our two "Partnerships for Innovation" Programs. NIH has installed the statewide Biomedical Research Integrated Network Center in our Biological Sciences Department. We are focusing on our discovery and learning niches and enhancing the quality of the learning environment. We are succeeding in creating a diverse student body and we are building diversity into our faculty. We are also thoroughly integrated into developing the state's economy.
