College of Science and
Technology Information
The college offers programs distributed
across the university's campuses and teaching sites in Hattiesburg (main
campus), Gautier, Ocean Springs (Gulf Coast Research Laboratory), Biloxi (Scott
Aquarium and Keesler AFB), Long Beach (Gulf Park Campus), and Stennis Space
Center.
An enrollment of approximately
3,000 majors (more than 500 are graduate students) is served by 170
faculty members.
The annual budget of the college is $50
million and the college received more than $35 million in grants and contracts
during fiscal year 2004.
Outreach, Research and Sponsored Programs
Government documents such as the Glenn Report predict a shortage of scientists
and engineers that is arising in large part from lack of adequate preparation
in mathematics and science at the fifth through 12th-grade levels. It is
important for the modern university to be as active outside as it is inside the
campus. In response to this need, we have initiated a strong educational thrust
directed at K-12. We have been awarded a large K-12 grant and we are currently
leading a statewide initiative for the NSF Math-Science Partnership. We are
initiating educational outreach thrusts to seek federal funding to underpin
Mississippi's K-12 math and science infrastructure. We are recognized and
funded by the National Science Foundation for our Polymer Learning Center, our
recently funded Materials Research Science and Engineering Center and
Industry/University Cooperative Research Center, and our two "Partnerships for
Innovation" Programs. NIH has installed the statewide Biomedical Research
Integrated Network Center in our Biological Sciences Department. We are
focusing on our discovery and learning niches and enhancing the quality of the
learning environment. We are succeeding in creating a diverse student body and
we are building diversity into our faculty. We are also thoroughly integrated
into developing the state's economy.
