Eating
Disorder Treatment
From 1979 to 1988, the "ideal" body, as seen in models
and beauty contestants, has gradually reduced in size to an
average of between 13-19% below healthy weight. This means that
the "ideal" body presented to American women meets
at least one of the criteria for anorexia nervosa, a life-threatening
eating disorder. At the same time, the availability of increasingly
richer and larger portions of food has given many people a double
message about healthful eating. Many women and men struggle
with unrealistic and self-punishing notions about what their
bodies should be like and experience psychological pain as a
result.
The Student Counseling Services (SCS) offers interventions for disorders, targeted for men and women,
athletic or non athletic, large or small. Our approach is holistic
and addresses issues in the individual and in society. We use
a professional, interdisciplinary team composed of a consulting
physician, psychiatrist, and therapists at the SCS. Together, the
team can help you to develop healthful
eating habits, an appropriate and healthful exercise routine,
and learn about the origins and dangers of dieting, eating
disorders, and activity disorders. Together,
these services help support lifestyle changes that can last.
In addition, the SCS offers Outreach presentations and services. If you or someone
you know is looking for a professional to present a workshop
or facilitate a discussion on any topic related to eating disorders,
please give us a call at the phone number listed on this web
site.
