ANGER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Anger Management Program is a specialized component of the Community Counseling and Assessment Clinic at the University of Southern Mississippi. We provide evidence-based treatment for a variety of anger problems in adults.

Anger is a normal emotion that may be helpful at milder levels, however, moderate to severe anger can have an adverse impact on one's physical health, relationships, educational and occupational well-being, and overall quality of life. Anger can also be expressed in unhealthy ways (e.g., aggressive behavior, reckless driving, substance abuse, and self-destructive behavior). Fortunately, effective treatments are available.

Participants Wanted for Paid Anger Management Study

Is your anger causing problems? We are now seeking medically healthy men and women age 18 and up for a research study on anger management. This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIMH) and has been approved by the USM Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects. Qualified participants will receive anger management counseling at no charge through the Community Counseling and Assessment Clinic. Those who complete the study will be paid $50-$100. If you become angry more often, more intensely, or for a longer period of time than most people, or if you have experienced negative social, occupational, or other consequences of your anger, you may want to contact the program.

Participants must not be taking prescription medication for anxiety, depression, or anger, and must not be receiving professional mental health services during the course of the study.

For further information, please call (601) 266-4601 and inform the receptionist that you are calling about the anger management program.

How We Are Different

Anger management services are becoming easier to find, but many rely on unproven methods which may actually make anger problems worse. The anger management services offered at our clinic are based on established research findings, and we are committed to constant assessment of treatment outcomes. The progress of each client is carefully monitored, and treatment procedures are adjusted as necessary.

Staff

Treatment services are provided by graduate students in counseling psychology under the supervision of professors, many of whom are also licensed psychologists. Close supervision, including video recoding of treatment sessions, benefits clients by insuring quality care.

The Anger Management Program is directed by Eric R. Dahlen, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology.

Fees

We typically charge $5 for the initial appointment and $100 for our anger management program. However, individuals who qualify for our treatment study will receive these services at no charge and can even earn up to $100 for completing the program.

Directions

We are part of the Community Counseling and Assessment Clinic located on the University of Southern Mississippi campus in the Owings-McQuagge building, Room 202. Visitors are asked to enter campus through the front entrance from Hardy St. and stop at the Information Booth to obtain a temporary visitor’s parking pass. The person working at the booth will be able to direct you to available parking. Please call (601) 266-4601 for more detailed instructions.
