Program Highlights

prac

COMMITTMENT TO TRAINING

We are committed to providing quality training and supervision to tomorrow's counseling psychologists, both in our in-house clinic and through numerous externship opportunities. Our program provides a wide range of training opportunities that prepare our graduates to work in a variety of settings.

Our program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association, with our most recent site visit in 2006.

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED RESEARCH

We were recently ranked in the top 20 of of the 73 counseling psychology programs for research productivity in the top counseling psychology journals over a ten year period by The Counseling Psychologist.

Opportunities for faculty-student research collaboration abound, and students are actively mentored in all areas of research.

COMPREHENSIVE CLINICAL TRAINING

Our in-house clinic offers close faculty supervision and contact with a diverse mix of college student and community clients. Specialty training is available in anger management, motivational interviewing, and parenting skills.

Our strong connections with the community provide students with diverse training experiences at inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities.

Over the past 15 years, approximately 90% of our students have obtained APA-accredited internships on the first application, with the majority of students securing their 1st or 2nd choice of placement.

Our graduates were recently ranked in the top 20 by scores on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) over a nine year period.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Our students have the opportunity to teach a variety of undergraduate psychology courses.

Students receive coursework and practicum experience in clinical supervision, permitting advanced doctoral students to supervise Master's students.

Our students are actively involved in professional organizations such as the American Psychological Association (APA), Society of Counseling Psychology (Div. 17), Mississippi Psychological Association (MPA). In addition, students participate in departmental organizations such as the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and Student Government Association (SGA).

COLLEGIAL ENVIRONMENT

Our program fosters an atmosphere of collaboration and collegiality. Far from competing with each other, our students support each other and form close bonds. Along with program faculty, more senior students are quick to welcome new students and share resources. This is an important reason why most applicants who attend our on-campus interview rank our program much higher afterward.
