Training Clinic

clinic

The Community Counseling and Assessment Clinic is the primary training site for beginning and intermediate practica completed by doctoral students in counseling psychology. In addition, the Clinic provides practicum training for students enrolled in the Counseling Psychology Master's program. Through serving as doctoral supervisory assistants for master's students while under the supervision of core faculty members, advanced doctoral students gain valuable supervisory training experiences. When appropriate, the Clinic also provides an excellent setting for data collection.

The Clinic is equipped for direct observation and recording of counseling sessions via an integrated closed-circuit audio and video system. Sessions are routinely recorded, providing both live and recorded materials for use in on-going supervision and training. The Clinic functions as a psychological services center for both the campus and the community-at-large, and is under the direction of a core faculty member. Collaborative relationships are maintained with other departmental training clinics as well as with the University Counseling Center and the Student Health Services. This arrangement facilitates referrals and consultation among these different agencies.

Opportunities in the Community

Students have also been involved in research and clinical training at various locations throughout the Hattiesburg community. The Counseling Center at Southern Miss provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable clinical experiences. In addition, program faculty members have strong relationships with the VA, Forrest General Hospital, Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources and Camp Shelby Youth Challenge Program, each of which provides valuable research and clinical training.

Departmental and University Facilities

Recent renovations in the Department of Psychology ensure that adequate research facilities are available to support faculty and graduate student research. Graduate students who are not associated with a permanent faculty laboratory are assigned study carrels within the Department. The Department supports a small-animal colony for biopsychology research, and two permanent state-of-the-art psychophysiology laboratories are available: The Psychophysiology Research Laboratory and The Sleep Research Laboratory. Clinic facilities and local agencies may, at times, be used as research sites, and more general research needs may be accommodated in multi-use sites located in the departmental suite.

Computing Facilities

Students have access to all of the major statistical software packages (BMD-P, SPSS, SPSS-X, MINI-TABS, etc.) through one of the computer labs (IBM-compatible) that are located on campus (including one in the Owings-McQuagge building). Macintosh computers are available in the lab that is located in the Performing Arts Center. Computers are linked to the internet, and iTech provides accounts for the entire Southern Miss community, including graduate students. Students thus have access to free, unlimited internet services and personal e-mail accounts.

University Libraries

Library functions at The University of Southern Mississippi are organized into four major units: the Joseph Cook Memorial Library (located directly across the street from Owings-McQuagge Hall), the William David McCain Library and Archives, the Teaching Learning Resources Center , and the Cox Library at the Gulf Coast campus. The Cook Library has recently undergone a major construction expansion and currently acquisitions over 20,000 new volumes annually. The holdings of the Library include more than 1.8 million volumes of books, bound journals, government documents and microfilms. The Library also subscribes to more than 4,732 periodicals, and cataloging services are available by computer throughout the campus. Access to dozens of on-line databases is provided through the reference department and a variety of CD/ROM index services are available on site free of charge. Recently, Southern Miss added an on-line connection with a library service that has major journal holdings. If needed journal articles are not available on campus, a faxed copy may be obtained from the on-line service at no cost to faculty members or graduate students.

Private research carrels are available for assignment to doctoral students on a space-available basis and at a cost of $50.00 per semester. The Teaching Learning Resource Center contains more than 13,000 audio-visual items and maintains audio-visual resources available for faculty and graduate student use in their research and instruction.
