Coursework
Students will be exposed to the foundation of psychology by taking courses in learning, behavioral neuroscience, and research methods.
Additionally, students take coursework aimed at developing your skills as a counselor. These courses include:
- Counseling Theories & Skills
- Multicultural Counseling
- Group & Family Counseling
- Human Growth & Development
- Testing, Assessment & Diagnosis
- Vocational Counseling
- Supervision
- Ethics
Nine credits of electives are also included in the program requirements and can include specialties such as counseling with children and adolescents, marriage and family therapy, substance abuse or additional courses in research or statistics. Students wanting to engage in research can use elective credits to gain credit for thesis or other research involvement with a faculty member.
Counseling Training
Students also complete a two-semester practicum sequence beginning as early as the second semester of coursework. Practicum involves a total of 50-contact hours of counseling with clients through the Community Counseling & Assessment Clinic and hands-on supervision by counseling faculty. A 600-hour community-based internship is completed following all coursework during the final semester of the program. Placements with community agencies such as Pine Belt Mental Health and Pine Grove Behavioral Health & Addiction Services provide a variety of learning experiences including inpatient and outpatient counseling with children, adults, psychiatric patients and with alcohol and substance abuse treatment. |
