September 9, 1957: Civil Rights Act of 1957

Congress makes it a crime to interfere with a citizen's right to vote. Lack of federal enforcement rendered this act a dead letter in Mississippi. Despite this, local people continued to attempt to register to vote and to file lawsuits against those who denied them that right.
