Martin Luther King, Jr., and other preachers arrested while demonstrating for "jobs and justice" in Birmingham, Alabama. Police Commissioner Bull Connor authorized his men to release firehouses and dogs on the marchers. Millions of Americans saw television coverage of this event; this led to a dramatic increase in support for the movement and also helped to convince legislators of the necessity of civil rights legislation.
