Number of interviews: Approximately 340+
Number of transcripts: Approximately 340+
Number of tapes: Approximately 340+ reel-to-reel tapes
Year(s) interviews were conducted: 1969-1971
Year(s) covered in the interviews: Late 19th century on
Principal interviewer(s): Clarence M. Simmons, Alvin Thomas,
and Willie Wade Pulliam
As the name indicates, the emphasis of this collection is
on sharecropping. Only a few interviews contain information
on the civil rights movement. Among questions asked that pertain
to the current project were: What do you think of the Civil
Rights Act?, Do you think that integration is a good thing?,
and Will equality ever come?
The interviews were conducted between 1969 and 1971 at various
locations throughout the state. The principal interviewers
were Clarence M. Simmons, Alvin Thomas, and Willie Wade Pulliam.
Some of the interviews were conducted by librarians and students.
Though the interviews were originally recorded on cassette
tapes, all are currently on reel-to-reel tape and are in excellent
shape. The library has a reel-to-reel machine, though the
director expressed a little concern about its reliability.
The transcripts, which show signs of considerable use, are
edited. Ten interviews in the collecion are pertinent to this
