How to use the subject index:

This subject index is a list of topics and names of people followed by the interviews in which they are discussed. In general, listings are in alphabetical order by topic or last name.

This index should be used as a general guide and not as an exhaustive resource. For the most part, this index was compiled using indexes already developed by archives for their collections. A few archives had no indexes. For some of those collections we were able to listen to the tapes and make our own indexes, and those are included here. When we were not able to do that, the interviews, of course, do not have subject listings and are not included anywhere in this index.

Even when there were indexes, archives varied a great deal in how they listed interviews and organized topics. While one archive might have listed "desegregation in the Canton schools" as a topic, another might simply list "school desegregation" and not specify a location although the school might very well have been in Canton. Another archive might simply list "education." We chose, therefore, to group topics under large, general categories when possible. Some subheadings are retained, but researchers should carefully check all the interviews under a general heading. The largest of the general topic categories we use are

    courts and the law (individual cases, juries, legislation, etc.)

    education (desegregation, schools, teacher groups, etc.)

    massive resistance (Ku Klux Klan, private academies, White Citizens' Council, etc.)

    protests (boycotts, demonstrations, sit-ins, etc.)

    violence (bombings, harassment, lynchings, etc.).

The subject headings marked with an asterisk (*) are people who also have oral histories in this bibliography's list of interviews.
