Already a Mentor? Log In Here

Career Services and the Southern Miss Alumni Association are pleased to announce a mentoring program created to provide students with an opportunity to acquire information and professional contacts from one of our most cherished resources: YOU. Mentors in this program can offer advice on topics including their career field, job seeking, or relocating to a specific city.

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF AN ALUMNI MENTOR?
No experience or training is necessary. All you need is a willingness to share information about yourself, your career field, or perhaps your knowledge on job seeking.
HOW DO I BECOME A MENTOR?
Registration is simple. Go to the Mentor Log-in page. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select "Click here to register".
WHAT DOES A MENTOR DO?
Mentors are considered a valuable resource for current students and recent graduates. Mentors can choose the type of assistance they are willing to provide including career information, employer information, career advising, relocation assistance, summer job assistance, career job seeking advice, networking, resume review, practice interviews, job shadowing, interns and cooperative education opportunities.
HOW MUCH TIME IS NEEDED TO PARTICIPATE?
Mentors can select how much time they can spend with students. Normally a few hours during the semester are expected. The number of contacts allowed can also be set in each mentor profile.
HOW OFTEN CAN I EXPECT TO BE CONTACTED BY STUDENTS?
By registering as an alumni mentor, you are providing the opportunity for students to contact you for assistance. While it is hoped that contacts will be made each semester, please understand that demand for information is often career specific and geographically driven. It is important to have the opportunity for student contact each semester.
WHAT IF I DECIDE I NO LONGER WANT TO PARTICIPATE?
Accounts can be set for zero contacts if desired or you can contact Career Services.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTOR?
Benefits include personal involvement with the Southern Miss community, facilitating the career choice or career direction of students and identifying candidates for intern positions or full-time job openings.

TIPS FOR MENTORS
Be friendly and sincere and emphasize your interest in assisting the student.
Set expectations for the student and ask for their goals.
Recommend books or other resources that have been useful to you.
Some students might be undecided about a career path and contacting you for information only on your chosen profession.
Your role is to provide students with information. Job placement or other gratuities are not expected.
