Curriculum
The Center for Science and Mathematics Education coordinates the programs in teacher education offered by the College of Science and Technology, and provides, in cooperation with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, a curriculum in the sciences for prospective elemntary teachers. Master's and Doctoral programs are available with emphasis in the various content areas. In addition, the Center works with the public schools to improve science and mathematics instructions for all students.
The University of Southern Mississippi is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, specialists, and doctoral degrees.
The teacher education program at USM is NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) approved.
The Secondary Education Program is designed to prepare for teaching science at the secondary level (7 - 12). The College of Science and Technology offers programs leading to certification in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or General Science.
The M.S. Program in Science Education is designed primarily to increase the professional compentency of science teachers and to provide the course work necessary to meet standards for advanced teaching certification. The program is also designed to prepare two year and four year college instructors. In addition emphasis areas in coastal and marin sciences are designed to prepare informal science educators.
The Ph.D. Programs in Science Education with emphasis areas in Biology, Chemistry, Coastal Science, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Marine Science, Mathematics, Medical Technology and Physics provide doctoral degrees in areas that prepare gtraduates for effective scinece and mathematics teaching at the community college and senior college levels, as well as careers in teacher education, informal science, or research in science or mathematics education.
