Master’s of Economic Development Requirements

The University of Southern Mississippi
Department of Economic & Workforce Development

Succesful completion of the MS in Economic Development requires a minimum of thirty hours of study. 

The program is primarily taught in an executive format .  This hybrid on-line/in-person instruction approach is geared toward working professionals, anywhere in the U.S. This highly innovative program allows you to commence your studies at any time in the year and deal with a large element of the studies in a distance learning mannerYou DO NOT have to be a Mississippi resident to enroll.  View the master's in economic development course details here. Required Course include:

  • ED 665 -Tourism and Service as Economic Development (3 hrs)
  • ED 701 -New Economy (3 hrs)
  • ED 725 -Technology-Based Entrepreneurship in Economic Development (3 hrs)
  • ED 730 -Innovation and Development (3 hrs)
  • ED 747 -Recruiting Innovative Businesses (3 hrs)
  • ED 748 -Globalization and International Development (3 hrs)
  • ED 761 -Contemporary Issues in Economic Development (3 hrs)
  • ED 765 -Business Retention and Expansion (3 hrs)
  • ED 698 or 789 -Capstone or Thesis Course (3 hrs)
  • ED 691 and 791 – Internship (4 hrs)

Other requirements include:

    • Plan of study form submitted to Graduate School
    • Transfer Transcripts received by Graduate School at least 1 month before graduation
    • 24 hrs with prefix ED and 18 hrs at 700 level with prefix ED
    • No incomplete grades
    • 3.0 GPA minimum
    • Successful completion of the comprehensive exam
    • Application for degree filed in Graduate School
    • Must be enrolled at time of graduation
