Goals and Objectives

GOAL 1: Advance and augment implementation of best practices for inclusive education and early intervention programs across the state that result in optimal development and educational achievement of children and youth with developmental and other disabilities and in improved graduation rates from high school and post-secondary institutions of higher learning. Emphasis Area: Education and Early Intervention

Objective 1.0 Continue to adjunct five interdisciplinary core courses, offer five specialized seminars and 15 field experiences in education and early intervention for academic departments at Southern Miss.

Objective 2.0: Through community services and technical assistance, including the development of model community and university-based service programs, and direct client services, promote and enhance state and community capacity building for strengthening early intervention and school services in natural and inclusive environments for children and youth with disabilities and their families as well as post-secondary experiences for university students with disabilities.

Objective 3.0: Develop and conduct 5 research or evaluation projects that are related to defining best practices in the areas of early intervention, inclusive school services and postsecondary training of students with disabilities.

Objective 4.0: Develop 10 products and disseminate information and research findings and best practices that contribute to education and early intervention practices within natural and inclusive settings to 5,000 stakeholders at national, state and local levels.

GOAL 2: Advance and augment implementation of best practices for health promotion and prevention activities, including recreation, that result in improved care and lifestyle changes for individuals with developmental and other disabilities and families, thereby improving quality of life. Emphasis Area: Health

Objective 1.0: Offer five interdisciplinary specialized seminars and five field experiences in health related programs and activities.

Objective 2.0: Through community services and technical assistance, including the development of model community and university-based service programs, and direct client services, promote and enhance state and community capacity building for strengthening health promotion, prevention and recreational outcomes of PWD across the lifespan.

Objective 3.0: Develop and conduct four research or evaluation projects that are related to defining best practices for health promotion, health literacy, and access to care for PWD and their families.

Objective 4.0: Develop 10 products and disseminate information and research findings and best practices that contribute to enhanced health literacy to 3,000 stakeholders at national, state and local levels

GOAL 3: Promote and increase homeownership, support community development, and increase access to safe, decent, accessible and affordable housing free from discrimination for people with developmental and other disabilities and their families. Emphasis Area: Housing

Objective 1.0: Develop and coordinate efforts to maintain and expand practica and internship placements in housing and related service fields (including IDS’ community housing initiatives) for 15 students enrolled in related disciplines such as but not limited to social work, marketing and management, finance, business administration, psychology, etc. as well as provide 10 guest lectures in classes at USM over five years.

Objective 2.0: Develop and provide housing and related services to people with disabilities and other members of the community which promote independence, productivity, community inclusion, and community participation through direct services to 1,000, technical assistance to 2,500, and training to 7,500 over a five-year period.

Objective 3.0: Development and conduct three housing research or evaluation efforts that affect or could affect individuals with disabilities and their families over five years.

Objective 4.0: Develop 10 housing products and disseminate housing and related information to at least 5,000 policymakers, administrators, direct service providers, advocacy organizations, public and private businesses and industries, and people with disabilities and their families to increase awareness, knowledge and skills regarding housing needs and best practices.

GOAL 4: Promote and enhance the employment of individuals with disabilities, including those with developmental and intellectual disabilities across the state Emphasis Area: Employment

Objective 1.0: Develop and coordinate practica and internship placements in employment efforts for people with disabilities for 10 students enrolled in related disciplines such as but not limited to social work, special education, psychology, criminal justice, community health, nursing, etc. as well as provide five guest lectures in classes at The University of Southern Mississippi over five years.

Objective 2.0: Develop and provide employment-related services to people with disabilities, community members and organizations through community services to 500, technical assistance to 1,000, and training to 2,000 over a five-year period.

Objective 3.0: Develop and conduct three employment research or evaluation efforts that affect or could affect individuals with disabilities over five years.

Objective 4.0: Develop five employment products and disseminate them to at least 2,500 policymakers, administrators, direct service providers, advocacy organizations, public and private businesses and industries, and people with disabilities to increase awareness, knowledge and skills regarding employment needs and best practices.
