ShareCare Overview

Share Care

ShareCare is a program designed to strengthen a community of family and friends in our area through the free, neighborly exchange of time and services. It is about true inclusion of everyone in our community. Each member contributes something to the collective, mowing a yard, for example, and his/her time contributed is banked as Time Credits, so in the future when he/she needs a service the person may call on any ShareCare member. One hour of service equals one Time Credit.. The basis of the program is building relationships among everyone, regardless of ability, resources or circumstance, in order to strengthen the fabric of our community.

History
On Oct. 1, 2005, ShareCare, with original funding from the Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities, was launched to build stronger, broader support for families, especially families with a member with disabilities. ShareCare has changed. It is now member-led, much broader and funded through donations.

The Program
ShareCare targets family caregivers of persons with disabilities and senior adults and includes opportunities for the entire community. ShareCare members are networked to build a community of sharing in order to help one another, using whatever skills or resources anyone may have to share with the group.

The TimeCredit Accounts
ShareCare continues to target family caregivers of persons with disabilities and senior adults, but is very much about opportunities for the entire community. ShareCare members are networked to build a community of sharing in order to help one another, using whatever skills or resources anyone may have to share with the group.

TimeCredits
Members earn TimeCredits by doing the things they enjoy and spend TimeCredits on the services of other members in the Group. Service needs can be shopped through the skills available in the group. One hour of service equals one TimeCredit, regardless of the service.

What We Offer
The ShareCare programs always offer an educational and counseling component through group meetings, classes, events, speakers, and our online newsletter ShareCare Notes. This Web site offers links to helpful resources, an events calendar and archives of past newsletters.
Currently the project is facilitating monthly ShareCare member meetings and exchanges.
