The mission of the University of Southern Mississippi Center for Child Development is to engage parents, teachers, and university students in developing healthy, motivated, and autonomous children in exemplary child centered and developmentally effective educational programs that promote evidence-based practice and a joyful, lifelong love of learning.
CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN LEARNING AND EDUCATION
The Center for Research in Learning and Education is an initiative led by the College of Education and Psychology at The University of Southern Mississippi. It is specifically designed to provide support for P-16 education in South Mississippi by offering opportunities for education professionals to collaborate and pursue targeted research, competitive proposals for external funding, and useful professional training.
For over 30 years, The Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies in the College of Education and Psychology has been dedicated to serving gifted and talented students, parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators, counselors, school psychologists, and other professionals.
The Community Counseling and Assessment Clinic is the service, training, and research center of the Counseling Psychology Program in the Department of Psychology. Services are provided by graduate students under the close supervision of program faculty members. We are located in Owings-McQuagge Hall on the University of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg campus.
The Psychology Clinic operates year-round, with the exception of academic breaks and holidays, and provides assessment, therapy, and consultation services to a range of adults and children.
The School Psychology Service Center (directed by Dr. Brad Dufrene) provides an opportunity for school psychology graduate students to work directly with children and their parents, under direct supervision of faculty members. The Center serves multiple functions including research, clinical training, and external funding generation in the forms of grants and external contracts.
The University Clinic for Family Therapy provides assistance to individuals, couples and families experiencing a wide range of personal or relationship problems. We are committed to a treatment approach in which individual growth and development is best understood and promoted within the context of family and community relationships.
The Autism Project’s mission is to demonstrate for school personnel and parents how to design and implement appropriate school-based programs for children who have been determined to be eligible to receive special education services in the category of autism.
Realizing Excellence for All Children in Mississippi (REACH MS) is Mississippi's State Personnel Development Grant, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs. REACH MS focuses primarily on supporting school-wide and district-wide implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Improving student academic and behavioral outcomes is about ensuring all students have access to the most effective instructional and behavioral practices and interventions possible. Awarded by the Mississippi Department of Education in 2005, the grant is operated by The University of Southern Mississippi's Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education.
AMERICA READS - MISSISSIPPI
American Reads Mississippi (ARM) is an AmeriCorps program with 192 members who serve as reading tutors in partnering elementary schools. Well trained individuals provide consistent tutoring for low-performing students thus impacting higher student reading test scores, improved student behavior, better attitudes toward school, and stronger staff confidence. ARM increases the pool of highly qualified teacher candidates by helping bright, energetic AmeriCorps members who want to become teachers develop professional skills needed for the teaching profession.
Alternate route licensure is a pathway to teacher licensure other than completing a traditional program of teacher education. Alterate route licensure is designed to capitalize on content expertise in an area of middle and/or high school preparation.
