Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Conference
This conference is designed to provide participants the opportunity to gain knowledge regarding Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) and how it supports Mississippi's Response to Intervention initiative.
Dr. Jeffrey Sprague
Jeffrey Sprague is a professor of special education and director of the UO Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior. He directs federal, state and local research and demonstration projects related to positive behavior supports, response to intervention, youth violence prevention, alternative education, juvenile delinquency prevention and treatment, and school safety. His research activities encompass applied behavior analysis, positive behavior supports, functional behavioral assessment, school safety, youth violence prevention and juvenile delinquency prevention.
Sprague is a contributor to "Early Warning, Timely Response," and the "1998, 1999 and 2000 President's Annual Reports on School Safety." In 1990 and 1997, he co-authored the first guide to Functional Behavioral Assessment (O'Neill et al., 1997). He has written a book on crime prevention through environmental design for school administrators. Jeff Sprague has authored a book on school safety with Hill Walker for Guilford Publications (Sprague & Walker, 2005; www.guilford.com), and a book on school-wide Positive Behavior Supports with Annemieke Golly (2004; www.sopriswest.com) In 2008 he published a book on Response to Intervention and Behavior Supports (www.shoplrp.com). He has published more than 100 journal articles and book chapters. Sprague directs an R01 research grant from the National Institute in Drug Abuse to conduct the first evaluation of the effects of Positive Behavior Supports in middle schools.
Dr. Heather George
Heather Peshak George is an associate professor in the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences, Department of Child and Family Studies at the University of South Florida in Tampa. She is co-director of Florida’s Positive Behavior Support Project, which is active in 78% of the state’s school districts across over 1,500 schools (more than 1/3 of the state’s schools). She is co-director of Project TSBA: Tiered System Behavior Analysts, a federal project to train behavior analysts in tiered PBIS implementation. Dr. George is also a research partner with the federally funded Technical Assistance Center for Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS), which has trained over 20,000 schools nationally, and she serves as the PBIS resource agent for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, Puerto Rico and Texas. In 2009, she was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association for Positive Behavior Support (APBS), served as secretary for three years on the Executive Committee, and has been serving as treasurer the past two years after being re-elected for another three-year term. For over 20 years, Dr. George has provided training and technical assistance in PBIS across individual, classroom, targeted group and school-wide levels within elementary, middle, high, center and alternative schools. Much of her professional activity involves coordinating systems change efforts at the local, state and national levels to support the implementation of evidence-based practices, particularly in PBIS and RtI. She is co-developer of the PBS Online Certificate Program at USF, serves as an editor for both Preventing School Failure and Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, and has co-authored many internationally used PBIS assessment instruments (Benchmarks of Quality, BoQ; PBS Implementation Checklist, PIC; Benchmarks for Advanced Tiers, BAT; Monitoring Advanced Tiers Tool, MATT; and the new SWPBIS: Tiered Implementation Fidelity Inventory).
