Frances A. Karnes, Ph.D.

University Distinguished Professor

Dr. Frances Karnes is Professor and Director of the Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi.  She also directs the Leadership Studies Program and is widely known for her research, innovative programs, and leadership training.  She is author or coauthor of over 200 published papers and is coauthor of 71 books.  Her work is often cited as the authority on gifted children and the law.  She is extensively involved in university activities and civic and professional organizations in the community. Her honors include:  Faculty Research Award, Honorary Doctorate from Quincy University, Mississippi Legislature Award for Academic Excellence in Higher Education, USM Professional Service Award, USM Basic Research Award, Rotary International Jean Harris Award, Woman of Achievement Award from the Hattiesburg Women’s Forum, Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois, Lifetime Innovation Award from the University of Southern Mississippi and University Distinguished Professor from the University of Southern Mississippi, TeachTechTopia’s Top 10 Most Influential Special Education Professors. The Board of Trustees of Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning honored her by naming the research, instructional and service center she founded at USM the Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies.
