Levels and Classes
There are five levels in the ELI program.
- Level 1 – beginners
- Level 2 – low intermediate
- Level 3 – intermediate
- Level 4 – high intermediate
- Level 5 – advanced
ELI students study grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary, and listening/speaking. They attend five classes each day, Monday through Friday, for a total of 25 hours of instruction per week. In addition, students should expect to have regular and frequent homework assignments.
New students take the ELI Placement Test during Registration, and their scores determine their initial class level. At the end of each term, students take Achievement Tests; test scores and class grades are combined to generate a Final Course Grade. A grade of 70% is required for promotion to the next level.
The ELI Language Proficiency Battery is administered at the end of each term at no additional cost to currently-enrolled students in Levels 3, 4, and 5. A high score on this examination may satisfy the English language proficiency requirement for undergraduate admission to Southern Miss.
