Applicants to the MA program should have completed appropriate undergraduate coursework in English with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Applicants to the PhD program should have completed appropriate undergraduate and Master’s coursework in English and have a grade point average above 3.5. Applicants to the combined MA/PhD program (literature only), should have met the requirements for entrance into the Master’s program. GRE scores (verbal, quantitative and analytical writing), official transcripts, a statement of purpose, a writing sample, and three letters of recommendation are required. While there is no magic number on GRE scores, admission is competitive and your scores will be compared with those of other applicants. Verbal and analytical writing scores are weighted more heavily than quantitative scores.
Applicants who are less competitive in one particular area may, under exceptional circumstances, be conditionally admitted. Students with a conditional admission must maintain a stipulated grade point average (see the Graduate Bulletin for details), as well as meet any further requirements stipulated by the English Department. The student who meets the requirements will be moved from conditional status to regular status; failure to meet the requirements will result in dismissal from the program.
