Foreign Language Requirements

Page Content

Graduate requirements for foreign language study vary by program. In some cases, an allied area of study that is approved in advance by the Director of Graduate Studies may be substituted for a foreign language. Please consult your degree requirements. All decisions regarding how to fulfill these requirements must be made in consultation with your advisor and approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. Students seeking to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language may do so in the following ways:

  • By having completed twelve undergraduate hours in a foreign language, culminating in 202 or its equivalent, with a B average or higher, within six years of beginning the program.
  • By retaking 202 and earning a B or higher if you have completed twelve undergraduate hours in a foreign language, culminating in 202 or its equivalent, with a B average or higher, and this coursework was completed outside of the six year window stated above.
  • By completing a six-hour graduate sequence in reading knowledge of a foreign language (501-502) with a B average or higher.
  • By passing the CLEP test. (See your Graduate Bulletin for details.)
