As part of the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan, Finding a Voice, students at Southern Miss have access to individualized assistance with writing and speaking assignments for any course through the University’s Writing Center and Speaking Center. Both centers offer free, personalized assistance at any stage of the writing or speaking process. Whether you want help brainstorming for topic ideas, developing an outline, conducting research, or learning proofreading or presentation skills, the centers can help you become a more effective writer and speaker. Want a space to practice your speech or presentation? The Speaking Center also offers a studio with the tools and space to rehearse, record, and view a presentation. Next door at the Writing Center, you will find a staff of friendly, experienced tutors who are ready to help you with any writing project. Having trouble citing your sources? The Writing Center staff can also help you with research and citation.
The centers are centrally located in Cook Library on the Hattiesburg campus and the Gulf Park Library on the Gulf Coast campus. At Southern Miss we are focused on the core student competencies that are foundational to success in the classroom and beyond. Take advantage of these free services for Southern Miss students, and find your voice.
