Students, parents and employees should check this site regularly for official updates from the Office of University Communications on H1N1 flu at The University of Southern Mississippi. Employee Update

  • Southern Miss employees may access sick and/or personal leave for absences from work due to having contracted the HIN1 virus OR to care for a spouse or children who have contracted the H1N1 virus.
  • Stay home if you have flu or flu-like illness for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever.  This should be determined without the use of fever-reducing medications.
  • Seek the care of medical provider if you have flu or flu-like illness.
  • If you have been exposed to someone who has the H1NI virus but not showing any signs of illness, use caution and common sense before returning to work.
  • Medical certification is required for absences lasting more than 32 hours.
  • Certain questions as to length of appropriate time off from work will need to be addressed on a case by case basis with the employee and manager.  Please contact Russ Willis, Director of Human Resources, at 601-266-4050 or Connie Morgan, Administrator for USM Health Services, at 266-5115.
  • Seasonal flu vaccinations will be available at Southern Miss Health Services Center by the end of September 2009.  The cost of the injection is $20.
  • HIN1 vaccinations will be available at the USM Health Services Center in mid-October 2009.  Due to a limited number of H1N1 vaccinations nationwide, the vaccination will be administered according to Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.
