Graduate Student Handbook
Please open and read the Student Handbook (pdf). It contains a detailed description of the MATL program organization including information about enrollment and online learning, finanical aid and assistanships, transfer course work and dual emphases, and most importantly graduation requirements with a description of the final portfolio assessment. All MATL students are responsible for knowing the information contained in the Handbook. Prospective students will also find the Handbook a valuable tool in better understanding whether the MATL program is right for them.

Dr. Laura Guglani presented “The role of religion in Spanish language maintenance in a Hispanic church” at the ALDEEU-Spanish Professionals in America Conference in St. Augustine, Florida, in April and “‘Somos la Iglesia Hispana’: Spanish language maintenance and religion in a Hispanic church” at the 24th Conference on Spanish in the United States in conjunction with the Conference on Spanish in Contact with Other Languages: Language Contact, Conflict, and Confluence at the Edge of the Nation in McAllen, Texas, in March.
Dr. Chris Miles presented "El lenguaje de la comida como cultura en la clase de español", at the ALDEEU-Spanish Professionals in America Conference in St. Augustine, Florida, in April.
Dr. Laurel Abreu presented "Applied linguistics and the foreign language teacher" at the Southern Conference on Language Teaching in Birmingham, Alabama, in April.
Dr. William Odom's latest book is his translation Bombing Hitler: The Man Who Almost Assassinated the Führer, a biography of Georg Elser. It is now available in a Kindle edition and as an audiobook.
Congratulations to Gilman Scholarship winners Kiara Breland, William Crosby, Norma Forrest, Laken Kendrick, and Bridgette Issacs (Spain); LaVanda Walker (Costa Rica); and Jonathan Sandig (Belgium).

The department welcomes back graduate teaching assistant Kristen Carter from her semester as an assistant in Granada, Spain. Kathy Kaufmann is working as a graduate teaching assistant on the Abbey Program in Pontlevoy, France.
The Department welcomes new faculty members Dr. Laura Guglani (Spanish and TESOL), Luisa Garrido Báez (Spanish and Italian), and visiting faculty Miles Doleac (Classics) and Jennifer Weir (French).
Courses in Russian, Chinese, and Italian are currently being offered on the Hattiesburg Campus. French is being offered for the first time on the Gulf Coast Campus.
