University of Southern Mississippi Foundation Announces Its Executive Committee and 2007-08 Board Members

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation has announced its 2007-08 executive committee and 39-member board of directors, 13 of which are beginning their first of a three-year term. The current 10-member executive committee, headed by second-year Board President Dr. James H. Thompson, Sr., LFACHE began its duties July 1. The Southern Miss Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that serves as a fiduciary of private funds donated to the University.

Thompson is the chairman, owner and CEO of Healthmark Corporation, in Milton, Fla. A 1958 graduate of Southern Miss with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, Thompson has owned, managed and developed hospitals, home health agencies, physician office practices and durable medical equipment companies. In addition, Thompson has earned a master’s degree in hospital administration and a doctorate of philosophy in health facilities management.

A President’s Circle member of the Foundation’s Honor Club, Thompson also is a Life Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives (LFACHE) and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health (England). He also serves on several civic and industrial boards and is a member of the Business Advisory Council for the College of Business, the Dean’s Council for the College of Health and the Department of Athletics’ Circle of Champions.

Thompson is married to the former Mary Margaret Boone of Hattiesburg, who also is a 1960 secretarial science graduate of Southern Miss. The couple resides in Milton, Fla., and has three children – daughter Terri Lynn Thompson Jenkins and sons J.H. Thompson, Jr., and E.W. Thompson – and four grandchildren.

Joining Thompson on the executive committee for the 2007-08 year include the Honorable James H.C. Thomas, Jr., of Hattiesburg, vice-president; Dr. David B. Moffett, Jr., of Laurel, secretary; Carl L. Nicholson, Jr., treasurer; Raymond E. Van Norman of Madison, investment committee chair; Lamar A. Reynolds of Hattiesburg, policies, planning and bylaws chair; Dr. Beverly Ann Dale of Los Altos, Calif., current giving committee chair; Dr. James Michael Herrington of Hattiesburg, planned giving committee chair; Rex E. Kelly, of Gulfport, member at large; and Robert “Toy” McLaughlin of Birmingham, Ala., immediate past president. Nicholson and Thomas also will serve in additional roles as chairs of the finance and audit committee and nominating committee, respectively.

Thirteen members in all are beginning the first of a three-year term on the board, including four who will be serving a second-consecutive three-year term. Returnees to the Board include Dr. Beverly Ann Dale of Los Altos, Calif.; Thomas Owen Mann of Houston, Texas; Dr. Doug W. Rouse, Jr., of Hattiesburg; and Raymond E. Van Norman of Madison. New members include Mark Cumbest of Moss Point; Judith D. "Skippy" Haik of Ellisville; Alfred Herron of Dallas, Texas; Warren A. Hood, Jr., of Hattiesburg; Tom McDonnell, III, of Jackson; Moran M. Pope, III, of Hattiesburg; Luke James Schissel, Sr., of Greenwood; Kathleen Shaughnessy of Biloxi; and Ora Lee Sims of Hattiesburg.

Members in their second year of a three-year term include executive committee members Reynolds, Thompson and Thomas, along with the Honorable Dorrance Aultman of Hattiesburg; Curt L. Hebert, Jr., of New Orleans; the Honorable Robert T. Jackson, Sr., of Hattiesburg; Kelly; Brenda Lambert of Hattiesburg; Powell G. "Gee" Ogletree, Jr., of Jackson; Jeffrey H. O’Keefe of Biloxi; Jim A. Payne of Ridgeland; Chief Justice Retired Edwin L. Pittman, Sr., of Ridgeland; and Dr. Thad F. Waites of Hattiesburg.

Members in the final year of a three-year term Raymond Thomas Arnold of South Hill, Va.; Garland “Buddy” Braswell of Point Clear, Ala.; the Honorable John M. Deakle of Hattiesburg; Dr. Fred H. Drews III of Hattiesburg; Dr. William G. Giles of Hattiesburg; J. Todd Gregory of Baton Rouge, La.; Dr. James Michael Herrington, of Hattiesburg; Rickey Darnell Jones of Hattiesburg; Dr. David B. Moffett, Jr., of Laurel; Carl Nicholson, Jr., of Hattiesburg; William Kenneth Stevens of Hattiesburg; Dr. Terrell Tisdale of Hattiesburg; and the Honorable Edward Arnold Williamson of Philadelphia.
