York Recieves 2007 Hub Award

HATTIESBURG, Miss. –Dr. Bennett V. York, a prominent Hattiesburg oral surgeon and real estate developer, was awarded the prestigious Hub Award for 2007 at a gala dinner and roast Oct. 30 at the Hattiesburg Country Club. The award was made to Dr. York for his outstanding contributions to the community, commitment to excellence, and dedication to public service.

The Hub Award originated in 1979 as a way to recognize Hattiesburg area residents who have made outstanding contributions to the community. The recipient of the Hub Award is also honored with the establishment of a fund in his or her honor.

From its origin in 1979 through 2006, the Hub Award has generated funds totaling $455.020. The University of Southern Mississippi has received more than $382,000 through the Hub Award program, which has funded scholarships for 350 students to date.

York is a native of Derma, Miss., the son of W.T. York, a school superintendent, and Clara V. York, a first grade school teacher. He attended the University of Mississippi and received his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Tennessee. For two years he served as Chief of Oral Surgery at Mather United States Air Force Hospital in Sacramento, Calif. He moved back to Mississippi in 1970 and established a private oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in Hattiesburg.

He holds professional membership in the South Mississippi Dental Society, Mississippi Dental Association, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

York is currently past president of the Mississippi Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and holds the prestigious designation of Diplomate in the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. An avid conservationalist, Dr. York is a recipient of the prestigious Wildlife Conservation Award from Mississippi Association of Conservation Districts.

One of Dr. York’s most noted real estate projects in the Hattiesburg area has been the Canebrake Golf Community and Canebrake Golf Club, a 1,300-acre master-planned lake and golf community. Canebrake subdivision won Southern Living’s Southern Home Award for Best Residential Development in 1989; was ranked second by Golf Digest in the new public affordable course in America category in 1999; and currently holds the third spot in Mississippi as rated by Golf Digest in its biennial ranking of the best golf courses in the state.

Dr. York's other developments include storage facilities, waste management, convenience stores, office buildings and outdoor advertising. Some of these developments spread from Florida to Hawaii.

An Elder in the First Presbyterian Church, Dr. York is married to the former Nancy Moore of Calhoun City and is the father of Bennett York Jr., John York and Paige York-Losee. He has 4 grandchildren, Abby, Lars, Ella and Anne Moore.
