Part-Time Faculty Stipends Resolution

Presented April 30, 1998; Passed May 8, 1998

RESOLVED, the USM Faculty Senate recommends that part-time [adjunct] faculty stipends be increased to a minimum of $2,500 for each three hour course, with equitable and fair consideration given to qualifications and experience.

The Faculty Senate Benefits/Work Environment Committee offers the following rationale:

  1. The Commission on the Future of the University's April 14, 1998 Report [Building Our Future Together] recommended that "when special programs or circumstances require adjunct faculty they should be fairly compensated based on qualifications and experience."
  2. The prevailing stipend of $1,250 per three hour course [without benefits] is grossly exploitive, inequitable, and morally unconscionable.
