2009 HOMECOMING CALENDAR

 

October 18

  • Midnight - Homecoming Float Stuffing
    • Students and campus groups are allowed to begin Homecoming float preparation at midnight. Float stuffing will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 23.

October 19

  • 5 p.m. - Homecoming Kickoff Party
    • The Student Government Association will host the Homecoming Kickoff Party from 5 to 6 p.m. in The District. There will be a DJ, food, drinks and various relay races.

October 20

  • 10 a.m. - Fountain Sit
    • Competition begins at 10 a.m. in the Shoemaker Square Fountain. The competition will end with the last person sitting.

 October 21

  • 7 p.m. - Miss. or Mr. Varsity Pageant
    • The theme for the pageant is “Famous Couples From the Past.” Women will dress like men, while men will dress like women for this competition, which begins at 7 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium.

 October 22

  • 8 a.m. - Eagle Hop and Campus Cleanup
    • Various campus beautification projects will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. including campus track pick-up. The Hop contest will take place on Weathersby Lawn at 5 p.m.

 October 23

  • Southern Miss Spirit Day 
    • All students are encouraged to wear black and gold.
  • 10 a.m. - Dixie Darling Alumni Beginners Practice
    • New Dixie Darling alumni will meet at 10 a.m. at the Payne Center to prepare for Homecoming weekend activities. Practice will be followed by lunch at the Power House. For more information, contact Dee Ervine at 601.818.6873. 
  • 11:30 a.m. - Football Luncheon with Coach Fedora
    • Join Head Football Coach Larry Fedora in the Thad Cochran Center Ballroom for a pregame luncheon. The luncheon takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, contact the Athletic Department at 601.266.5017.
  • 1 p.m. - Dixie Darling Alumni Registration and Practice
    • Registration for Dixie Darling Homecoming events will take place from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Payne Center. Following registration, the Dixie Darlings alumni will practice from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., also in the Payne Center. Following the alumni practice, Dixie Darlings will then practice with current Dixie Darlings on Pride Field from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Dee Ervine at 601.818.6873.
  • 4 p.m. -Minority Constituent Society Homecoming Community Service Event
    • The Minority Constituent Society will host a community service event with the Boys and Girls Club of Hattiesburg at 4 p.m. The group will assist with tutoring and games during their after school time.   • 6:30 p.m. - Alumni Association Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony
    • The Alumni Association will induct seven outstanding alumni into the Hall of Fame. The banquet and ceremony will be held at Southern Oaks House and Gardens and will begin at 6:30 p.m. For tickets or more information, contact Rene’ Trigg at 601.266.5013 or email rene.trigg@usm.edu.
  • 7 p.m. - Dixie Darling Reunion Dinner
    • Dixie Darling alumni will hold a reunion dinner at 7 p.m. at the Canebrake Country Club. Dress is casual/cocktail attire. For more information contact Dee Ervine at 601.818.6873.
  • 7 p.m. - Department of Economic and Workforce Development 30/30 Event
    • To mark the 30th anniversary of the Master of Science in Economic Development Program, the department is hosting the 30/30 event, $30 for dinner and $30 donation to the USM Foundation at the Courtyard Marriott in Hattiesburg.   • 7 p.m. – Friday Night at the Fountain
    • Friday Night at the Fountain, located north of the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building, will feature the hip­hop/rock band Cayerio. A pep rally will follow, beginning at 9 p.m.

Saturday, October 24

  • 7:30 a.m. - 14th Annual Homecoming Eagle 5K Run
    • Registration for the run is $20 for adults and $15 for children under age 14. Race day registration is $25. Each participant will receive a t-shirt. Race-day registration will be at the Eagle Walk on the east side of The Rock. The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Eagle Walk. The 5K is sponsored by the Southern Miss Student Sports Medicine Association. 
  • 8 a.m. - “Mo” Memorial Golf Tournament
    • Proceeds from the 4-man scramble golf tournament benefits the Marc Moses Memorial Scholarship Fund. Moses was a Southern Miss alumnus and member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Cost to play is $90; the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. and be held at Shadow Ridge Golf Club in Hattiesburg. For more information, contact David Sutton at 601.543.2417 or suttonb1@aol.com or J.R.   • 11 a.m. - Alumni Association Awards Brunch and Business Meeting
    • The Alumni Association will have brunch, honor award recipients, elect officers and discuss the future of the Association. The brunch begins at 11 a.m. and the cost is $15 per person. For more information, contact the Alumni Association at 601.266.5013.
  • 11:30 a.m. - Nursing Constituent Society Homecoming Meeting and Tailgate
    • The Nursing Alumni Constituent Society will hold its annual Homecoming meeting at 11:30 a.m. in Elizabeth Harkins Hall. The meeting is open to all nursing alumni and is a chance for the group to plan events for the coming year. The group will also tailgate outside of Elizabeth Harkins Hall from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. before the football game. For more information, contact Miriam Cabana at 601.266.5278.
  • Noon - Homecoming Parade

  • 3 p.m. - Department of Economic and Workforce Development Tailgate
    • Tailgating will begin at 3 p.m. and continue until kickoff at 6 p.m. Cost of the tailgate will be $20 and will cover food and fun. The tailgate will be hosted by Robert Ingram of the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance and will take place on the Northeast corner of The Rock.   • 3 p.m. - College of Science and Technology Hospitality Corner 
    • The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will host the College of Science and Technology hospitality corner as part of its 50th anniversary celebration this fall. Alumni of the department are particularly encouraged to come back and visit with faculty, staff and current students.   • 3 p.m. - Dixie Darling Alumni Scholarship Presentation

  • 4 p.m. - Eagle Walk

  • 4:30 p.m. - Dixie Darling / Dixie Darling Alumni Group Photo
    • All current Dixie Darlings will take a group picture are 4:30 p.m. in front of the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building. Following the picture, at 5 p.m., Dixie Darling alumni will join current members for a group photo, also in front of the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building.   • 6 p.m. - Southern Miss vs. Tulane
