Coastlines Literary Magazine

Coastlines is soliciting submissions for the Spring 2012 issue. The invitation is extended to the University students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Gulf Coast community.

The following will be accepted for consideration:
• Poems – any style or subject matter will be considered. 100 lines or less.
• Short stories – under 5,000 words
• Essays – under 5,000 words examining topics of interest to the general reader.

Document all sources in MLA In-Text Style. Submit entries as a MSWord document. Coastlines especially desires writing on regional topics with a coastal flavor, but will consider all quality work.

Editors reserve the right to reject or edit submissions. Each contributor may submit up to 5 poems, 2 short stories or 2 essays. Contributors will each receive a complimentary copy of the issue containing their work(s). We project an early April publication date with contributor notifications in March.

Deadline for submissions is January 15, 2012. Direct all submissions to wil.watson@usm.edu.

Lenny Emmanuel Award | Coastlines announces the 2012 Lenny Emmanuel Award for Best Student Essay at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. The award is named for poet, editor and adjunct professor Lenny Emmanuel of Pass Christian, Miss.

At the University of Iowa, Professor Emmanuel studied with renowned poets Donald Justice and Mark Strand. His dedicated, painstaking attention to the improvement of student writing has been a mainstay of the USM Gulf Coast English program for a decade.

All current students or recent graduates are invited to submit essays written for Southern Miss classes during the 2011 calendar year. These essays may be scholarly, research, personal or persuasive essays, reviews or opinion pieces on any topic as long as they were originally written for a 2011 class at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. Optimum length would be 2500-4500 words, although we will consider each piece on its merits.

Document all sources in MLA In-Text Style. Submit entries as a MS Word document. One submission per contestant, please. The Emmanuel Award winner and runner up will be recognized and have their essays published in the Spring 2011 Coastlines.

The deadline for entering the Emmanuel Award contest is January 15, 2012. Direct all submissions to wil.watson@usm.edu.
