American Studies: requires a minimum of 30 hours in course work including either AMS 304, 403 or 404, drawn from the courses listed under the major requirements (see SMART degree plan). No more than 6 hours from the student’s major field may count toward the minor.
English: a minimum of 36 hours beyond ENG 101 and ENG 102, including at least 9 hours at the 300 or 400 level.
History: a minimum of 36 hours in HIS, to include HIS 101 and HIS 102
Political Science: completion of PS 101 and PS 201, plus an additional 12 hours, with courses drawn from at least 3 of the seven areas of political science listed under the major requirements (see SMART degree plan).
Paralegal Studies: Thirty-six hours in major required from total 128 hours in program. An overall GPA of 2.5 required.
Political Science: Thirty-six hours in major required from total 128 hours in program. Eighteen hours required for minor. A minimum of 64 hrs. required from four-year college, 45 hrs. 300- or 400-level courses, last 32 hrs. from The University of Southern Mississippi.

Master's Degrees in Arts & Letters offered at Southern Miss Gulf Coast:

Master of Arts in English: Most of the 30 hours of course work for this degree can be done at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. However, a candidate for the Master’s in English will probably have to plan on taking 9 to 12 hours in Hattiesburg.

Master of Arts in History or Master of Science in History: Master’s degree programs in History meet state requirements for AA social studies certification and Southern Association minimum requirements for junior college history instructors. Applicants must submit scores from the verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Exam and have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on the last two years of undergraduate study. This program may be completed at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. A 3.0 GPA on graduate course work is required for graduation.

Master of Arts or Master of Science in International Studies: This program is intended for graduate students in history with an international studies orientation.

Dual Master's in History and Library and Information Science: This program leads to two master’s degrees: a Master of Library and Information Science and a Master of Arts in History. The program requires sixty (60) hours in course work, including twenty-four (24) hours in history, which may be taken at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Master of Arts in Political Science: Requirements for the Master of Arts degree include 30 (thirty) semester hours of course work (18 hours or more of 600 level or higher), including a thesis. All M.A. students are required to complete PS 511, Political Research, plus at least 6 hours of thesis research, PS 698. All students must successfully complete comprehensive examinations in three areas of Political Science (see below). These are normally given in fall and spring semesters only and should be scheduled to occur at or near the end of the student’s course of study. A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation.

Master of Science in Political Science: Requirements for the Master of Science degree include 36 (thirty-six) semester hours of course work (18 hours or more of 600 level or higher). All students must take PS 511 and PS 512. A minor of 9 (nine) hours in a cognate area approved by the department is suggested but not required. All students must successfully complete comprehensive examinations in three areas of Political Science (see below). These are normally given in fall and spring semesters only and should be scheduled to occur at or near the end of the student’s course of study. A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation.

Master of Science in Public Relations: The Master of Science with a major in Public Relations is available at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. This program is designed for individuals who want to excel in communication, advertising, public relations, sales, news, publications, or marketing. Students are required to take 18 hours at the 600 level. In Fall 2007, Southern Miss Gulf Coast will offer MC 620, 629, 691 and 720.
