This course is part of the General Education Curriculum of the
University.

Textbook: College Algebra: A Graphing Approach 2nd Ed 2005 G Williams
Materials
needed: Textbook, graphing calculator (either TI 83 or 84), pencil, colored
pencils. A binder is highly suggested.
Goals: This course is designed to provide a review/introduction
to basic concepts in algebra through a problem solving approach.
The primary emphasis is placed on the relevancy and usefulness
of mathematical skills and concepts to real world problems such
as business, science, education and social science. Concepts
will be presented through verbal, symbolic, numeric and graphic
approaches. Functions will be incorporated throughout the course.

Tests: There will be four tests plus the comprehensive final exam.
At times, rework or bonus points may be given for additional points.
“Take home” test points will also be given.
Homework: Homework will be assigned but not always graded. Homework
is the way to learn and re-enforce the knowledge of the class.
You will be given notice when homework will be picked up for a
grade.
Class
Attendance: Class Attendance is imperative for learning
and roll will be checked. 75% of classes must be attended to receive
a passing grade. You are responsible for topics covered in class
and Tests will be taken when scheduled or an automatic one letter
grade deduction on make-up test is possible. You are allowed only
one make-up tests. Attending all classes will not give you bonus
points, but you will find being in class is the best way to learn
the most material.
Other information:
- You should
plan on spending 5-6 hours a week outside of class on individual
study, review and preparation to attain a full understanding
and have success. Your academic background and individual level
influences the time required. Attentiveness and participation
during
class is important. A student who disrupts the class in any
way will be asked to leave.
- Please
turn off all cell phones and other electronic devices as class
begins.
- Individual help is available outside of class. Before getting
extra help, you should attempt the work on your own and know what
you are having trouble with. Always bring your notes, examples
and textbook with you when getting help. Getting extra help is
not getting someone to do the homework for you. Working with another
student is not cheating. However merely copying another’s work
and turning it in as your own is.
- Although homework is not graded, copying homework and not doing
it on your own wil not help you to learn the material. Get a
study buddy, get a study group together, arrange a time
to work together.
- There are various free online, CD and video tutorials, reviews
and help offered by this textbook. Videos are also available through
the library. The math lab will also be open at various hours once
the semester gets underway.

Dates: Notice the drop dates on the list dates. This date will
