MAT 169: Calculus with Analytic Geometry III

Textbook: Calculus, James Stewart 5e.

Course description: 3 Hours. Sequences, series, including Taylor series and power series, parametric equations and polar coordinates in calculus, vectors and the geometry of space.

Prerequisite: Mat 168

Course requirement: Students are expected to attend all classes. Exams will be taken on scheduled dates. Make up exams will be allowed only with instructor permission. Cooperative study is encouraged both in and out of class. Homework assignment will be given every Tuesday, they will be collected next Tuesday and some of the exercises will be graded. The average of the homework will count as another exam. If a homework worth n points is turned d days late, then dn/50 points, 2 % per day, up to a maximum of n/2 (50 %) will be subtracted from the points that would have been earned if the assessment had been turned in when due. A student will not be allowed to drop this class after Wednesday, October 4, the LAST DAY TO DROP A CLASS WITHOUT ACADEMIC PENALTY, unless the student is withdrawing from the University (all classes). You will have 3 exams and the homework. The lowest grade among those 4 will be dropped.

Grading policy: 90-100 A; 80-89; B 70-79 C; 60-69; 0-59 F
The test average is 75% of the final grade. The final exam is comprehensive and is 25% of the final grade.

Test average is computed as follows: add up the 3 highest grades of the exam s and the homework, then divide the sum by 3

Course average us computed as follows: (3* test average +final exam)/4
Content: Chapters 11, 12, 13 and 14 of the book. We will also study application of series to finance.

Exam 1: Thursday, September 21
Exam 2: Thursday, October 26
Exam 3: Thursday, November 30
Final Exam: As in the final examination schedule posted by USM.
