Primary Text: College Geometry: A problem solving Approach
Musser and Trimpe

Professional Education Statement: The University of Southern Mississippi’s Professional Education Unit is a community of learners who value the power of knowledge to inform, inspire and transform lives.

You must activate your USM email account and log on to Web CT as soon as possible.

Description: This course is designed for pre-service secondary teachers to review/extend geometry topics. Presentation models are incorporated for promoting effective practitioners in the field. Real life applications, multicultural contributions, integration with NCTM Standards/MS Curriculum Framework, problem solving techniques, and applications through technology will be included.

Policies and Materials:
Materials: Ruler, protractor, compass, scissors, colored pencils, calculator (preferably a TI-83 plus or 84+ graphing). Always have your textbook! A binder might be best or you will need a folder to collect papers.

Class attendance is important. You cannot make up the time and interaction you will miss. We will do some things via Web CT so come to class and join in. We all learn from one another. The use of Geometry sketchpad and other technology resources will be included – free sites, things for your calculator… (At this point you do not need to purchase Geometry Sketchpad)

Grading
90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D
< 60 F

Assessment:
-----This will be updated on web CT. There will be at least 3 tests including the final, a project/paper and lesson plans as well as other homework assignments. Assignments need to be collected as part of your capstone folder. You will also be required to look at the standards for Geometry (both NCTM and MS Frameworks) and do work to coincide with those. Some assessment will be online.

NCATE/NCTM Standards (http://www.nctm.org/about/ncate/secondary_indic.htm)

Standard 11: Knowledge of Geometries
Candidates use spatial visualization and geometric modeling to explore and analyze geometric shapes, structures, and their properties.

Indicators
11.1 Demonstrate knowledge of core concepts and principles of Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries in two and three dimensions from both formal and informal perspectives.
11.2 Exhibit knowledge of the role of axiomatic systems and proofs in geometry.
11.3 Analyze characteristics and relationships of geometric shapes and structures.
11.4 Build and manipulate representations of two- and three- dimensional objects and visualize objects from different perspectives.
11.5 Specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry, vectors, and other representational systems.
11.6 Apply transformations and use symmetry, similarity, and congruence to analyze mathematical situations.
11.7 Use concrete models, drawings, and dynamic geometric software to explore geometric ideas and their applications in real-world contexts.
11.8 Demonstrate knowledge of the historical development of Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries including contributions from diverse cultures.

EXTRA CREDIT POLICY
The instructor might offer extra credit points on the exams or during class discussions on a challenging question or problem that arises. However, under NO circumstance will there be extra credit projects during or after the course to raise an individual's final point total.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
