Position:
- Professor - Department of Coastal Sciences, Environmental Biochemistry and Toxicology
- Director Consortium for Estuarine Ecoindicator Research for the Gulf of Mexico (CEER-GOM)
- Adjunct Professor - University of Mississippi, Department of Pharmacology
- Adjunct Professor - Duke University School of the Environment
Education:
- Ph.D. - University of Groningen, The Netherlands, 1975. Biochemistry.
- Drs. Degree - University of Groningen, The Netherlands, 1969. Microbiology and Biochemistry.
Research Interests:
- The main interest of my laboratory centers around the study of (1) the dual role of metals and oxygen as essential and toxic elements in biological systems, and (2) the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals on estuarine species. Specific research projects address:
- Structure, function, and transcriptional/translational control of proteins involved in detoxification of metals, and in antioxidant defense
- Application of molecular tools for assesment of ecosystem health
- Development of molecular indicators of dissolved oxygen stress in estuarine organisms
- Mechanisms of effects of estrogenic and antiestrogenic chemicals on sex differentiation and reproduction of fish
- All projects use marine organisms as experimental animals.
