Bill Hawkins is the director (retired) of The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory and professor in the Department of Coastal Sciences. His research interests include pathological effects of infectious agents and environmental toxicants on marine organisms and the use of marine animals as models for the study of diseases, particularly cancer and cancer causing compounds. He has published more than 100 articles in the scientific literature. Hawkins received his bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University and his doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine.
