Driving Distractions and Accident Rrisks

 The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Campus Security Department is hosting a Personal Safety Workshop on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. The workshop will be held at the Gulf Coast Research Lab Cafeteria from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided to participants.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Affairs Division will provide the featured speaker as a public service to university students, faculty and staff members.


The featured speaker, Trooper Johnny Poulos, is a 10-year veteran of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Trooper Poulos is a National Safety Institute certified defensive driving instructor. He is an ASE certified auto technician with 25 years experience in the automotive repair field. Trooper Poulos is a critical incident debriefer trained through the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and is also a Field Training officer for new Troopers.


Since 2000 Trooper Poulos has presented to thousands of students and citizens on driving responsibility and the dangers of distractions. In 2006, Trooper Poulos began the Mississippi Highway Patrol endorsed program, “It’s My Life.”  The “It’s My Life” driver safety presentation was awarded first place at the 2007 USEOW (Uniformed Safety Education Officers) National Conference in Dallas TX.  Within the last year, Trooper Poulos has been active presenting at National Guard Yellow Ribbon Programs.
