Geographic Information System (GIS) Mapping Our Partner:

Reef Assessment

• Mississippi’s oyster resources are monitored on a regular  basis to assess total number and size per reef
• Oysters are collected by dredge
• Results are submitted to the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) Shellfish Division
• Mapping of oyster resources in Mississippi
• Poling of the substrate to determine type and firmness 
• Take corresponding Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates
• Integrate data into GIS
