Mississippi Beaches Advisory/Closure History
2010

When a Beach Advisory/Closure is announced, MDEQ advises against swimming and other water contact in these waters until water samples show a consistent safe level for human contact. When water samples show that levels are safe for human contact, the beach advisory will be lifted. Additionally, swimmers are reminded that the Beach Task Force has a standing recommendation that swimming not occur during or within 24 hours of a significant rainfall event.

Description

The temporary water contact Advisory is issued due to a known sewer bypass from a malfunctioning pump station between Breeden Place and Ramoneda Street. The bypass was discovered the morning of November 10 and may have allowed sewage to enter the MS Sound near Bay Oaks Drive. The City of Bay St. Louis has stopped the bypass and initiated repair and clean up activities to minimize impacts on water quality. MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact recreation such as wading or swimming in these areas. In addition, people should avoid eating fish, crabs, and shellfish from near shore waters in this area until the advisory is lifted. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources has been notified and is taking appropriate steps in regards to adjacent shellfish growing areas.
