Dr. Eric Hoffmayer and colleagues at the GCRL are on the prowl for sharks this summer. Hoffmayer is seeking answers about sharks in Mississippi's coastal waters -- their abundance in different seasons and where they are found. "The Mississippi Sound is an important nursery ground for at least nine different shark species," he said. "Understanding how sharks use our coastal waters will provide us with valuable information on how to protect and manage them in the future. These sharks inhabit our waters eight months out of the year, but we know very little about them." The shark research is part of the Center for Fisheries Research and Development at the laboratory.
