Southern Miss Lab to Host Nature Photography Events

OCEAN SPRINGS - The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory will host an evening presentation and all-day nature photography workshop Feb. 17 and 18 at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.
Award-winning wildlife photographer Tom Ulrich will open his visit to the coast with a free presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the Caylor Auditorium at the Laboratory. He will feature his 2005 images of birds and other wildlife from Costa Rica, the Falklands and North America.
The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 18, in Room 103 of the Caylor Building at the GCRL.
Registration fee for the workshop is $65 per person. The fee also includes a continental breakfast, light lunch, snacks and a nature photography book that Ulrich authored. Participation is limited to 20. Ulrich tailors the experience to meet needs at all degrees of skill.
In addition to fundamentals and tips from composition to marketing photos, Ulrich will provide an overview of digital versus film photography.
"I will most likely hit digital a little harder since I have changed over (to digital)," Ulrich said. "Film will still be a highlight."
Ulrich grew up in South Chicago, graduated with a degree in biology from Southern Illinois University and taught for four years before launching his career as a freelance photographer. He has supported himself with nature photography for the past 30 years.
His library of more than 300,000 transparences includes birds and mammals from all over the world. His photographs have been featured in publications such as National Wildlife, Audubon, National Geographic, Montana Outdoors and Life. He has published six nature books.
Dr. William E. Hawkins, GCRL executive director, said Ulrich brings the scientific and artistic worlds together through his observations and documentation of the behavior of animals in their natural habitat.
