Gulf of Mexico Fish Contain Heart-Healthy Omega-3 Fats

Awareness that omega-3 fats are critical for good health is increasing. What many people don't know, however, is that cold water fish are not the only fish that are good sources of omega-3. Warmwater fish from the Gulf of Mexico are also good omega-3 sources.

Drs. Julia S. Lytle and Thomas F. Lytle, chemists and professors emeritus at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, investigated omega-3 content in Gulf fish in a study during 1989-1992. They continue working to spread the word about the benefits of omega-3 fats and their availability through consumption of Gulf fish.

Their research provided nutritional information on 45 species of Gulf fishes. This Web site provides their nutritional information about Gulf species as well as information on why certain fats are needed in the diet, the optimal balance of omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids, and simple dietary changes to achieve better health.
