Capt. Derek Groves
GCRL's R/V HERMES is a 38-foot steel trawler that has long formed an important part of our education program. She is U.S. Coast Guard approved to carry a crew of two and a maximum of 20 adult passengers.Since her christening in 1955, she has faithfully provided steady transport on hundreds of field excursions for students to the waters of Mississippi Sound.
With a draft of 4.5 ft., she is capable of 8 knots and has a 450 mile cruising range, being able to draw on 400 gallons of fuel for extended trips. She is equipped with a 115V AC generator, radar, Loran-C, and VHF radio/telephone.
Fees (effective date 10/1/2001)

Fees are assessed from the time the boat leaves the home dock until it returns, and are rounded to the nearest 1/2 hour. For extended cruises, a new base fee starts each 12 hours. Fees listed include charges for crew and fuel except in the case of an extended cruise. If the vessel operates over 12 hours in any 24-hour period, an extra captain will be assigned at the rate of $100 per day. If the vessel operates over 12 hours in any 24-hour period and the number of passengers exceeds six, an extra deckhand will be assigned at the rate of $65 per day.
If a "Request for Services" form is not completed and filed in the Boat Operations office at least 5 working days prior to any trip, the trip will not be confirmed and could be subject to changes in dates.
