The Exhilarating World of Crustacean Coodies!

Noah Zimmerman

Crustaceans are an important economic commodity in the world. Along with the increased demand for production of shrimp and crabs in the global market comes the challenge of providing healthy stocks of these animals. Research at GCRL is not only involved in identification of new and emerging threats to crustaceans but also in the dynamics of these diseases in individual hosts and their populations. Using a range of techniques from molecular biology to modeling and physiology we are researching several diseases that threaten the production of healthy stocks of crustaceans around the world. The understanding of these varied techniques provides information for better management of crustacean communities while allowing for flexibility on the part of the researchers to work on several questions at once. This presentation will briefly discuss techniques and tools used in the Crustacean Disease Lab and demonstrate how we have put them to use to better understand the dynamics of crustacean disease.
