Summer Field Program 2009
Shark Biology
This specialized course will provide an overview of elasmobranch biology with an emphasis on anatomy, physiology, and ecology of sharks, skates and rays. The course will start by introducing students to the diversity of sharks, skates and rays by discussing the taxonomy of this group. Lecture topics include evolution, anatomy and physiology, behavior, ecology and fisheries management of elasmobranchs. Field work will consist of several collecting trips, inshore and offshore, where local elasmobranch species will be observed and studied in the wild. Prerequisites: three semesters biology, including Marine Biology, or permission of instructor. Dr. Eric Hoffmayer. Elasmobranch Biology; COA 422/522, 422L/522L. Five semester hours credit (3/2). Course field fee is $400.00.
