Biographical Sketch

Dr. Modest Gutu was born March 14, 1937 in Lipcani, in the Romanian province of Bessarabia (now the Moldavian Republic) which was annexed to the Soviet Union in 1940.During the Soviet occupation (1940-1941), a part of Modest Gutu's parents' family was deported to Siberia. In 1941, during the Second World War, Bessarabia was liberated by the Romanian army and returned to the mother country. In 1944, while the Soviet troops were on the offensive, the Gutu family left the native land and took refuge in the old Romanian territory. From 1948, when the communist regime came into power in Romania, persecution, security investigations, privation and humiliation began for the family, both because of their Bessarabian origin and because Modest's father belonged to the clergy, having graduated from the School of Sacred Music. All these things affected the childhood, studies, and career of Modest Gutu.

Modest Gutu attended primary school and gymnasium in Miorcani (Botosani County), Northern Moldavia. During 1951-54, he attended the "Grigore Ghica" High School in Dorohoi. As a schoolboy, he was very fond of physics and mathematics, being attracted by the technical field. When he graduated from the gymnasium, one of his teachers of physics offered him the book, "The Microscope and the Telescope", as a sign of appreciation, with the following dedication: "Only science be your guiding beacon. For his hard work, to Gutu Modest". It seems that his teacher's premonition didn't fail. Although he had wanted to pursue a career in the electrical/technical field, Modest Gutu had become specialized in a field where the microscope was indispensable for his activity. The reason for the change of profession had been imposed by the political environment: the schools for children of politically disapproved families were only agricultural ones. After Modest Gutu graduated from high school, his enrollment at the Polytechnic Institute from Iasi was rejected, so he had to enroll in the Horticultural faculty. It was then that the professional future of Modest Gutu was determined. At the end of his first year of agricultural training he became very ill and a five month period of hospitalization was necessary. As a consequence, he withdrew from the faculty and became deputy teacher in a gymnasium. A new attempt to attend the Polytechnic Institute failed, and he was expelled after the first semester as a result of new political verifications. He came back as a deputy teacher of agriculture and biology, which allowed him to attend a faculty in the same field. He attended the 3 years Pedagogical Institute, Biology-Agriculture specialty, and then graduated the Faculty of Biology of the "Babes-Bolyai" University at Cluj. His graduation paper was "The study of decapod crustaceans from the Romanian Littoral of the Black Sea", for which the famous romanian professor of invertebrates, academician, Vasile Radu (a specialist of land isopods), gave him the highest mark (10), with congratulations. Thus, although Modest Gutu had once wanted to become an engineer, he had succeeded instead in becoming a zoologist.

On March 1, 1965, the academician Mihai Bacescu, well-known specialist of peracarid crustaceans and director of "Grigore Antipa" National Museum of Natural History in Bucharest, employed Modest Gutu in this institution. Gutu's talent as an illustrator influenced the director's decision. This employment was of special significance for Dr. Modest Gutu's professional future. From the very beginning, Gutu worked closely with Bacescu, usually making illustrations of mysidaceans and cumaceans, as well as illustrations for the Decapod volumes of the series "Fauna României" ("Romanian Fauna"). At the same time, Gutu participated in all the other activities characteristic of museums of natural history. In 1969, Professor Bacescu recommended that Dr. Gutu study the tanaidaceans of the suborder Monokonophora (now Apseudoidea, suborder Apseudomorpha). Occasionally Dr. Gutu also studied other invertebrate groups (insects, coelenterates, polychaetes, copepods and decapods). In 1971, Dr. Gutu coauthored his first paper on tanaidaceans with Dr. Bacescu. From the time that he began to study these tanaidaceans, M. Gutu noted inconsistencies in the classification of monokonophors, which had been done by Karl Lang in 1970. In 1972, M. Gutu published a paper in which he proposed a new family and several subfamilies of Tanaidacea. In 1978, M. Gutu was admitted to work toward his Ph.D. For the next two years, he completed his exams and scientific reports and began to prepare his thesis which dealt with monokonophore tanaidaceans. His studies were briefly interrupted due to political issues (a prerequisite for receiving the doctoral degree was that he be a member of the Communist Party). Modest Gutu prepared was finally able to complete his dissertation and receive his doctorate in 1998 after the fall of the totalitarian regime, which also had thwarted the academic advancement of other Romanian scientists with differing political ideologies. By this time, Modest Gutu had already become internationally recognized as a specialist. Dr. Gutu's thesis, presented at the "Babes-Bolyai" University in Cluj, with Professor Nicolae Tomescu, was entitled "The morphological and systematical study of the Recent Tanaidacea (Crustacea) from the Suborder Apseudomorpha. This is acknowledged as a definitive work on the suborder. In 1990, he was promoted to Senior Researcher, and was later appointed Head of the Invertebrate Department, a time-consuming job. He resigned after five years to pursue the study of apseudomorphs full-time.

As a museologist Dr. Modest Gutu distinguished himself as a respected and a prolific lecturer, both within the museum and outside (making over 130 presentations); he participated in the reorganization of some sections of the public exhibitions, after the earthquake in 1977. Once the building was repaired (1998-2002), he created two temporary exhibitions (one for the museum's 70th anniversary celebration and another which exhibited the results of the expedition from Brasil). He enriched the displays of the museum with his numerous collections made in the Black Sea, Cuba (1973), Indonesia (1991) and Brasil (1994). Also, he participated in publications in the popular press as well as television shows. He held several classes at the Faculty of Biology (including those for the masters degree) and guided teachers toward their degrees in the gymnasium and high school.

He published 6 booklets for children, 3 nontechnical books, and a travel book. For two books he received the 1st Prize for Romania (1977 and 1982), as a result of readers' surveys. He made 6 documentary films about Indonesia, Bali Island, Brasil, and over 2,000 slides (almost 400 of them with submarine images from the Carribean Sea and the surrounding seas of Indonesia). All of these were presented at various conferences.

With respect to scientific research, Gutu's activity focused primarily on the morphological and taxonomic study of tanaidaceans of the suborder Apseudomorpha, but he also occasionally worked on the Tanaidomorpha. Of over 124 published notes and papers, 58 concern tanaidaceans. He described 111 taxa of crustaceans, 106 of which belonging to the Order Tanaidacea. These include descriptions of 5 families, 5 subfamilies, 26 genera, 2 subgenera and 68 species. He described 3 genera and 6 species within the suborder Tanaidomorpha; the rest concern members of the superfamily Apseudoidea. A simple analysis shows us that of the known apseudomorphs (ca. 300 species, 6 subgenera, 68 genera, 12 subfamilies and 11 families), Dr. Gutu described 62 species, 2 subgenera, 23 genera, 5 subfamilies and 5 families, with a few contributions including the cooperation of colleagues from Romania, the USA, and Colombia. The taxa described were collected from various sites in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans as well as the surrounding seas, except the cold polar ones.

In the morphology field, Dr. Modest Gutu underlined the major importance of some pereopodal microstructures in the identification of species and genera, regardless of age and sex.

In addition, M. Gutu and T. Iliffe described a new genus and species (Thetispelecaris remex) from the marine caves of the Bahamas. This discovery contributed significantly to the systematics of the superorder Peracarida.The workers erected a new order, Bochusacea, together with the two species of the family Hirsutiidae (initially included in the Order Mictacea). At the same time Dr. Gutu declined the Order Mictacea (which remained with a single species), to the rank of suborder of a new order, Cosinzeneacea. The Spelaeogriphacea was declined to the rank of suborder. Studying again the very first description and on the basis of some SEM micrographs, Dr. Gutu presented new morphological arguments on the validity of the Order Bochusacea. Although the groups were not recognized by specialists, subsequent analysis of the nuclear small-subunit ribosomal RNA confirmed the presence of bochusaceans as a separate order of the superorder Peracarida). Moreover, the recent description of a new species by Ohtsuka et al., (2002), which was included in the Order Bochusacea, also supports the validity of this taxon.

Gutu was editorial secretary for the volume "Viitorul marilor si al oceanelor" ("The Future of the Seas and Oceans"), Academia Publishing House (1977); he coordinated the volume of the "Grigore Antipa" Museum bulletin regarding the results of the expedition from Indonesia (1997); he contributed to the treatise Grassé (1999), Catalogue of Crustacea of Brazil (1998) and verified the list of tanaidaceans which appeared in the European Register of Marine Species (2001). He was invited to work as specialist in Cuba (April-July 1973), Monaco (October-November 1980 and November 1987ÐJanuary 1988), at Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (University of Southern Mississippi, USA) (October 1999) and at the Texas A & M University at Galveston (November 1999). He reviewed numerous manuscripts for well-known scientific journals from Great Britain, Australia, France, Japan, U.S.A., etc.

Specialists from Australia, Cuba, Russia, U.S.A. and Romania dedicated him one genus and 7 species.

He is laureate of the "Richard" Prize, given by the Science Academy of France (1986), for his research on the type-specimens from the collections of the Oceanographical Museum of Monaco.

At the age of 65, after spending 37 years in the "Grigore Antipa" National Museum of Natural History, after a childhood full of privations which he vanquished with patience and tenacity, after making impressive scientific contributions, Dr. Modest Gutu reminds me of one of the imposing oaks of the century old forests of Moldavia, which stubbornly weathered many storms.
