Dr. Rosalia K. Kudinova-Pasternak was born 21 January 1925 in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), USSR. She graduated from Moscow State University in 1949, after which she worked for the Institute of Oceanography from 1950 to 1952. She then joined the Department of Biological Sciences at Moscow State University as a research scientist. In 1956 she became involved in teaching as an assistant lecturer and in 1963 she became an assistant professor. After a productive career of research and teaching, she retired in 1993 and now lives in Moscow.
Dr. Kudinova-Pasternak's main fields of interest are systematics, bathymetrical distribution, and zoogeography of deep-sea fauna. Her earlier research dealt with the filtration ability of bivalve molluscs and the ecology of Teredinidae. She began her studies on Tanaidacea in the early 1960's with particular attention to abyssal and hadal species and took part in marine expeditions and cruises on board the R/V Vityaz and Akademik Kurchatov. From that period until her retirement, she produced over 40 publications on Tanaidacea. Two of her publications were co- authored with her husband, Dr. Fedor Aleksandrovich Pasternak, who also is a zoologist. Their daughter, Dr. Anna Pasternak, is a research biologist and plankton specialist at P.B. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology.
During the last half of the 20th Century, Rosalia Kudinova-Pasternak along with M. Bacescu, Modest Gutu, and the late Karl Lang and Jürgen Sieg were responsible for the descriptions of over half of the presently known species within this relatively little known, but diverse and bionomically important, order of primarily deep-water crustaceans. Dr. Kudinova-Pasternak's work on tanaidaceans dealt with zoogeography, ecology, taxonomy and systematics, including the descriptions of a new family, 16 new genera, and over 100 new species.
