Photographs of whale sharks sighted in the Gulf are very valuable to researchers. The spot pattern on individual whale sharks is distinctive and can be used to identify specific animals. Scientists use the pattern in the area shown below as a standard. If possible, please shoot photos of the whale sharks you encounter, and closeups of the area between the gills and dorsal fin on the left side of the shark.
