History of Gamma Theta Upsilon
On May 15, 1928, a local professional fraternity, under the name of Gamma Theta Upsilon, was organized at Normal Illinois, under the leadership of Dr. Robert G. Buzzard. Prior to that time, it had been known as the Geography Club of Illinois State Normal University. After three years of successful functioning, letters were sent out to other Geography clubs suggesting that a national fraternity be organized. The national organization, with four chapters, was announced on May 15, 1931. Gamma Theta Upsilon, with ten chapters, was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois as a professional fraternity in Geography on March 5, 1936. In January, 1969, Gamma Theta Upsilon became an International Geographical Honor Society.
Purpose and Benefits
GTU allows students the oppurtinity to share and explore their interests in Geography. One of the most significant and immediate benefits that members enjoy is the comraderie that is fostered. Undergraduate students are able to become more "at ease" with upper classmen and graduate students, benefiting from their experience and knowledge. Members also obtain personal satisfaction from knowing they have been accepted into a well known and respected honor society. At a larger scale, members are able to attended the regional Geography conferences hosted by the SouthEastern Division of the Association of American Geographers (SEDAAG). Many members also attend the national conference hosted by the Association of American Geographers (AAG). These conferences allow members to witness current research topics in areas that they are interested in as well as acquinting them with topics they are not so familiar with. New members start meeting researchers and insturctors from around the globe while older members close to graduating are reunited with old friends and instructors, not to mention potential new employers. Often times, GTU members present papers which bring honor and recognition to themselves, GTU, and their schools. Finally, GTU members are able to recieve student discounts on memberships to organizations, annals, journals, and software packages.
Membership Information
Membership is open to graduate students, undergraduate students, geography and non-geography majors, or anyone interested in geography. Everyone is encourage to join us for our monthly meeting. Only members are allowed to hold office or vote in election.
Reguluar memberships have the following requirements:
Completion of two courses in Geography with a B average or better
Completion of three semesters of college level courses
Overall GPA of 2.75
One time dues of $25.00
Associate memberships has the following requirements:
Completion of one course in Geography with a B average or better
Completion of one semester of college level courses
$10 membership dues
